Edit: After some further research it appears that if you are on iOS 8 then it would try to send the message as an iMessage (blue) and attempt to send. That could be another reason too, however I would assume he would connect to wif if cellular data I turned off. But who knows what the situation is on the other side, but I do know for sure that imessage is working as it should.
